May Monthly - 1% Better
“If you were able to improve by 1% each day for an entire year, and those gains compound, you would end up 37 times better at the end of the year.” - James Clear
And so April closes. I hope you had a wonderful "New Year month" as I did. As I was reading some quotes one day, I came across one that talked about 15 minutes being 1% of your day, and suddenly life was so much easier. If you have ever read James Clear's book, Atomic Habits, you will have learned that 1% of your day, times each day of the year, equals 37 times better by the end of the year. If you are like me however, that sounds really cool, but you have no idea how to put it into practice. (I even had a reminder set on my phone that said, "1% better today," but didn't know how to use it.)
When you realize that 1% equals 15 minutes, life suddenly gets so much simpler. Think about it, you can fit 15 minutes into your day. Whether it’s getting up a little earlier, going to bed later, or maybe even doing that much less social media, fitting in 15 minutes a day can get you 37% closer to your goal by the end of the year. So my challenge to you this month is fit in 15 minutes a day focused specifically on the goal you want to accomplish. For me it will be 15 minutes of piano practice and 15 minutes of soccer. I have worked on it a bit this past month and I have found that sometimes I am having so much fun I want to do it for longer. Sometimes, however, I have to think, “It’s just 15 minutes, I can do it for that long.” It doesn’t take that long and gets you that much closer. Power down and take the road less traveled. Make your book great! Proverbs 27:23 says, “Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.” So take stock of your life and think, “When I look back at the end of May, what am I going to want this chapter to look like?” Then start writing it.
